Mount Cardigan: Cleanup On Mowglis

On August 3 & 4, Highlander Team Leader Josh took the initiative to check off one of the jobs on our to-do list. Starting north of the mountain on Sculptured Rocks Road, he hiked up Mowglis Trail to check on how it was doing. At the jct. of the Orange Cove Trail, he found it strewn with trash. Not having the gear to deal with it, Josh continued up Mowglis to inspect its condition. It didn't take long to see that the trail was in definite need of a shave and a haircut. So he turned around and returned the way he came.

Properly equipped with tools and trash bags, Josh returned the next day to finish the job. From Elwell Trail Jct. to Crag Shelter, he trimmed back the brush and branches. He also cleared 6 blowdowns from the trail and cleared 3 drains.

Approaching the peak of Firescrew, Mother Nature’s fair warning of rumbling thunder and low lying dark clouds meant that it was time to head home. Back at the Orange Cove Trail, that trash Josh found earlier hadn't cleaned itself up. Pulling a 50 gallon contractor bag from his pack, he FILLED IT UP!

Now with a full garbage bag slug on his back, looking like some sort of backwoods Santa Claus, he trekked back to his car trying to beat the coming rain. I fine days work Josh, actually 2 days work, well done.

UPDATE: A few days later, a friend of the Highlanders brushed out the Mowglis/Orange Cove jct. so it looks even better now. Thank you! See picture below.

A blowdown across the trail.
Another blowdown (you get the idea).
Storm clouds building, time to skeedaddle.
No blowdowns now!
Trash on the trail.

A few days later with a little help from our friends.
